Good to know

  • This is one-way, not a loop — you finish at Achada do Teixeira after descending via PR1.2. Pre-book a taxi pickup there before you start; on-demand transport at the trailhead is unreliable.

  • To beat the tour groups that arrive from 09:00 onwards, target the earliest possible morning slot when planning your trip. Arrive at the car park at least 30 minutes before your booked time, as space is highly limited.

  • Direct Horários do Funchal mountain bus runs daily from Funchal (Teleférico 4A) to Pico do Areeiro at 06:00 and 13:30 (€3.00 onboard only, 31 seats max). Phone reservation (+351 291 705 555) recommended 7 to 2 working days ahead. Note: the full PR1 traverse ends at Achada do Teixeira where there is no bus — pre-book return transport.
