Monte Palace Tropical Garden
Built on the grounds of a former 19th-century hotel in Monte, this 7-hectare garden cascades down the hillside in themed sections — from Japanese bridges and koi ponds to African cycads and native Madeiran flora. The standout is the underground museum housing one of Europe's largest private mineral collections alongside monumental Portuguese azulejo tile panels. Combine it with the Monte cable car ride up from Funchal for panoramic views both ways.

Fanal is a remnant of Madeira's UNESCO-protected Laurissilva forest, home to centuries-old til trees twisted into surreal shapes by wind and time. Frequent fog blankets the forest at ~1,300 m altitude, creating an atmosphere that feels plucked from a fantasy film. Drive up via the ER110 across Paul da Serra — mornings tend to be foggier, but that's when the magic peaks.
