Monte Palace Tropical Garden
Built on the grounds of a former 19th-century hotel in Monte, this 7-hectare garden cascades down the hillside in themed sections — from Japanese bridges and koi ponds to African cycads and native Madeiran flora. The standout is the underground museum housing one of Europe's largest private mineral collections alongside monumental Portuguese azulejo tile panels. Combine it with the Monte cable car ride up from Funchal for panoramic views both ways.

Good to know
Nearly everyone does the same combo: cable car up, garden (around €18 entry), then toboggan ride down — all paid separately. The garden entrance is a short walk from the cable car's upper station.
The garden is built on a steep hillside with hundreds of stairs. Start from the top and work your way down — it's far easier than climbing up.
