When to visit: month-by-month on Madeira

Why the island works year-round — and how to dodge the cloud, the crowds and the wettest trails.

Cloud inversion at the peaks
In this guide

Madeira’s nickname — the island of eternal spring — is mostly earned. Sea temperatures barely move, and Funchal rarely drops below 16°C or climbs past 26°C. But the microclimates matter, so here’s the honest month-by-month.

Spring (March–May)

The sweet spot. Hillsides are green, waterfalls are full, and the famous jacaranda blossom paints Funchal purple in late April. Trails are in great shape and the crowds haven’t peaked.

Summer (June–August)

Warmest and busiest. The south coast is reliably sunny; the north and the high peaks can still catch afternoon cloud. Start hikes early to beat both the heat and the tour buses. Book accommodation well ahead.

Autumn (September–November)

Arguably the best swimming — the sea is at its warmest after the summer. September stays settled; rain ramps up through November, which actually makes the levada waterfalls spectacular.

Winter (December–February)

Mild and quiet, with the lowest prices. Expect more rain on the north coast and occasional snow on Pico Ruivo and Pico do Arieiro. Pick south-coast and low-altitude plans, and you’ll still get plenty of sun.

Beating the cloud

The single best trick: go up early. A cloud inversion often sits below the highest peaks in the morning, leaving Arieiro and Ruivo in brilliant sunshine above a sea of white. By midday the cloud frequently burns off or rises. Wander Madeira’s weather-aware suggestions are built around exactly this.
