Madeira’s levadas are narrow irrigation channels cut into the mountainsides over the last five centuries to carry water from the wet north to the dry, sunny south. Today they double as the most rewarding walking network in the Atlantic — gentle gradients, deep laurel forest, and waterfalls around every bend.

Why walk a levada?

Because the hard part — finding a route through near-vertical terrain — was solved 400 years ago. The maintenance paths beside each channel are mostly flat, which means you can walk for hours through dramatic scenery without the relentless climbing you’d expect on an island this steep.

What to pack

• Grippy footwear. The paths are often damp and occasionally muddy.
• A head torch. Several levadas pass through unlit tunnels — some over a kilometre long.
• A light rain layer. The north and the high ground catch cloud even when Funchal is glorious.
• Water and a snack. Cafés are rare once you’re on the trail.
